Welcome to the ~ New Beach Report of 2008

16 July 2008 - Lancing Beach

It was a stunning hot summers day here in Lancing, and having a walk on the beach I noticed some of the most beautiful shoreline vegetation around from yellow poppies to red valerians, I have to admit I always seem to pass the plants and go straight for the water line.

After some investigation  I was informed that all these plants are out in bloom far to early as they started back in April just after the snow storm we had and they are still going strong.

6 April 2008 - Lancing Beach

Not really a day for rock pooling, but in all a stunning snowy Aprils day on Lancing beach.

February 2008 - Lancing Beach East (West Sussex)

A very early evening walk on Lancing Beach came out promising, but unfortunately devastating at the same time. I found the usual Whelk shells & whelk egg casings, empty dogfish cases, ray cases, white & orange sponges. I also found 3 dogfish eggs with embryos still inside and about 100 if not 1000 dead snakelock & sea anemones.

Sadly I was told that this is normal, as we had such a  very mild winter the anemones thought spring is here so they started to reproduce, and as the very cold weather started to set in again they & their babies died. So they all washed up on our shoreline. I found 100’s just laying there, dead. Not a very pretty sight  I have to add.

Lancing Beach West Sussex. January 2008.

Cargo Ship the Ice Price shed over 2500 tons of timber when it sank. all of this timber made its way onto Worthing. Lancing, Shoreham & Brighton beashes during this time. The clean up lasted for weeks and beashes where closed.

This was one of the most interesting sights the people of East & West Sussex saw for years.

Back in November 2007 (Lancing Beach West Sussex)

Went for a long walk on Lancing beach. To my horror I found many dead Spider Crabs. Some as small as a a 50 pence peace and the largest I found was like 4 tennis balls in a square. (Photo attached) the reason for this was mainly fishing boat discards but also due to high tides and very rough seas during this time of year. Nothing unusual, but never the least, not very nice either.
